Island Barbarian

Hey Guys! Here's a character design I did on a story I have been developing. But I'm gonna need some of your guys' feedback or opinions. He's not finished yet, I still need to add some more bells and whistles on him but you guys get the jists. I need an opinion mainly on his tattoo design. When doing research I found that some tribes (in the Philippines of course haha) sometimes painted their bodies full of tattoos. So the idea is that the tattoo represents a sort of "armor" on their body. What do you guys think? I can mix and match tattoos also if you like haha.

Nice! He looks like a 3d model on the small image. I think if you were going to show him off as a game character it would be cool to show all the different tatoos as optional looks that a player could choose.

Far as I could see this is some good work.

Since you ask for some feedback Id say that I love the Idea of Warriors covered in tattoos that protect them like super natural armor. Id like to see your guy covered with more tats like 75% Tat 25% skin. you know for more protection.

I Like p.m comment of the different tat options but maybe the higher the level of the character the more tats the more power. You know the character levels like Nino taught us about.

I say this because this design and concepts screams video game to me so I’m sorry if that wasn't your intention. Just keeping it reel. but its not a dis I would choose this character in a game easy. Its dope. and I love that you referenced your culture. Showing your hood pride.

As usual you got the top notch rendering and lighting skills. Colors working great for me too. Before you tighten it up any further maybe you could try and tweak his proportions a bit and try to make his silhouette more interesting. When I do this I just think in terms of Straights on curves ( tipping hat to Sheldon) and contrast between the main masses like head torso and legs ( tippin to Clapp).

I’m not saying do more shape studies just tweak what you have in Photoshop because its already really strong.

I love his face, he looks pacific Islander all the way. Since you got a good design for the head maybe some detail shots of it showing the different face tats. there just hard to read at this scale and angle.

O.k. that’s all i can think a of. I just gave you everything i got. Don’t you miss critiques in school. It was like this times 10. Aahh they hurt so good

and as in the tradition of a compliment sandwich i end with saying - Great work keep it up

0h and his weapon rocks!!!!

Duuuuude. Sweet. The thumbnail fooled me as well, I thought it was 3D too!

I rather like how his whole body is not covered with tatoos. The asymetry of the one you chose to highlight works really well with me. The design on it speaks to me more as well, as the circular shape on his man-boob could easily represent some sort of simbolic charm, kinda like games like Warcraft may use runic symbols on enchanted items. It also reads to me more like armor. The way it's concentrated on his right arm brings to mind that anime show, Fullmetal Alchemist, in which through his skill as a warrior he may not require full body of armor. As far as the face, I agree that the one you chose with that one reads all that well, or any of the others that cover the eye. I think it may complicate the character's facial expressions. Maybe you could do something that goes AROUND the eye more, kinda like Tyson's, but less boring and gay.

hmm... God of War, Pino style!
I like where this is going....

...okay, I cant help myself...
I swear I don't mean to dis, dude. This piece is awesome, and the way you pushed his arm musculature is cool, but the way his bicep looks less developed kinda makes it look like his main exercise involves a nudey mag...

Thanks for all the comments guys it's really going to help me push the design and also go back and fix some other character designs that I was working on. I actually do miss the critiques gary, but thas the nature of the biz. And leo... now i might hafta give him bigger biceps or jes a nudey mag in that right arm of his for fun HAHA.

This is nice stuff Lawrence - you really thought this character through. I like that you're representing a piece of your culture ... all in all, its looking good.
