Well, because ALL artists are obsessed with themselves:

1) Self-Portrait in the style of a favorite artist. (Not frightfully original, but a nice opportunity to see who's influenced by who.)

2) Self-Portrait Forty Years from Now.

3) Self-Portrait as a Monkey.

I like Aidan's ideas. You might also try:

4)Yourself or a friend as a superhero/with a super power. This could be done in the style of a favorite comic artist, perhaps.

5)Self-portrait as a monster.

Maybe I'll think harder about this and post more suggestions.

I've always wanted to see outlaw bikers on here. You can even design the bikes, the biker chicks(hardcore) and maybe stops along route 66. Something like that.

Illustrate a Song - This is an assignment they give to a class at CCA. It's tough, depending on how literally you interpret the song, but the results are usually great.

Draw a scene from whatever book your reading. I myself am in the middle of reading "Into thin Air" it's a first hand account of what happens when Commercial adventure companies try to take novice climbers to the top of Everest. Fascinating read, yes there was a movie.

Speaking of rock climbing, draw your favorite sport.

Aidan has a really good idea - I like the narcissistic approach to a new project - why not an illustration that portrays the two sides we see ourselves in? i.e. the devil and the angel, fire and the water ..the two sides of a coin ... . etc ... you know .. "contrast,"
